What is this new trend of transformational Breathwork?
Breathwork has been around a very long time.
When people hear ‘breathwork,’ they often think of:
Pranayama (ancient yogic practices like Nadi Shodhana)
The Wim Hof Method (modern ice-and-fire endurance training developed by Wim & Marcel Hoff)
But there’s one that merges ancient wisdom with cutting-edge trauma release, which goes by a number of different names; Conscious Connected breath; Transformational breathwork; Owaken Breathwork; Somatic Breathwork to name a few.
The technique I practice called Conscious Connected Breath, and stems from Holotropic Breathwork, (which was developed by Stan and Christina Grof during psychedelic research in the 70s). They found that specific breathing patterns could induce non-ordinary states—similar to plant medicines—without substances, so they began to develop that. Today, we’ve refined this into a safer, more accessible vessel for healing
This transformational breathwork technique takes the participant into an altered state of consciousness. I have had clients express that their experience working with me was not dissimilar from the experiences they had had on plant medicine journeys like Ayahuasca. From that state, in a safe environment, a well trained facilitator can support the participant to release tension and emotions stored within the body, revisit past experiences and reframe them to break looping cycles playing out in their lives, shift limiting belief systems and so much more.
I feel, the reason breathwork is becoming so popular right now is because people are seeing that the old ways just aren't working. People aren't willing to waste their precious lives living sub-optimally, or wanting to pass repressed emotions or detrimental belief systems on to their children.
Many of my clients come to many after finding that talk therapy is only getting them so far, and as we work together, have experienced first hand the benefits of working with the body.
My approach to breathwork is not a rigid system—it’s a living, breathing fusion of:
Owaken Breathwork’s core framework
Shamanic practices (honouring the land, ancestral connections, the water, and the breath as spirit)
Traditional Indigenous practices: Incorporating energetic and physical attunement.
Human Design (personalised support specific to your DNA)
Cacao (for in-person sessions, to soften the heart and deepen release)
And so much more, skills and techniques that I've picked up in over a decade in the healing arts.
So does Breathwork sound like a bit of you?
Although I offer breathwork in Christchurch, I do offer session online via Zoom, and have clients across the world.
